Cheapest MartinLogan Motion C Center Channel Speaker (Black) Good speaker, but you may want Motion 8 to save $$$By Stephen M. LerchAs part of the Amazon Vine program, I had actually received a MartinLogan Motion 8 Center Channel Speaker (Piano Black, each) and this was, as stated in my review of the MartinLogan Motion 12 Floorstanding Speaker (Black Ash, each) and MartinLogan Motion 10 Floorstanding Speaker (Black Ash, each), the impetus for my rebuilding my home theater. The Motion 8 eclipsed everything else in my setup (it was a home theater in a box (HTIB)).After hearing the clarity of the Motion 8, I had decided it time to upgrade my setup to something worthy of actual listening instead of a source of annoyance that it had become.As part of my auditioning speakers, I had decided to check out the above mentioned Motion 10 and Motion 12s as those are the speakers that are supposed to be matched with the Motion 8 and I was looking more for floor standers than bookshelf speakers. Also during this auditioning, I found a local hi-fi retailer with a Motion C in stock and I decided to compare the Motion 8 I had received with the Motion C. The Motion C is the more expensive option of the two, so I was curious what the difference was.After carefully comparing the two, both within a 5.1 setup with the other speakers in the Motion line and "side by side" in a blind direct comparison, it turns out that despite the $100 MSRP price difference, the Motion C really isn't worth the extra money. It sounds fantastic, reproducing movie dialog with stunning clarity, along with movie sound effects (clanging shell casings, etc). But then again, so too does the Motion 8! Just for fun I also tried out some music and found that the Motion C does an OK job reproducing that. The frequency response of the speaker doesn't lend itself to subwoofer free music playback (and that's not what it is meant for anyway) but the highs were high and mids were, well, OK at best (this is the same thing with the Motion 8; they weren't designed with music playback in mind in anything other than in movies as mostly background sound). Also to get a better feel, we configured the Motion 8 and Motion C as a stereo pair and played music. They were pretty evenly matched sonically as best I could tell, further lending me to not recommend the Motion C over the Motion 8.I was a little confused by the price discrepancy, and after a little research I found the specs on the Motin 8 and the Motion C. In spec comparison (yes, spec comparison. I did the listening test and couldn't really hear the difference), it seems the Motion C has a SLIGHTLY higher sensitivity. We're talking 1 db difference which most normal people will ever be able to differentiate. The speakers wires are well marked and the instruction manual is detailed enough for most homeowners (if you read the manual).I've also purchased the MartinLogan Helos 20. These are great speakers with very full sound. You can wire these speakers (Helos) for single channel (left or right) or full channel (left/right). Michael SanfordI have been a long-time user of Martin-Logan products and knew both partners when they sold stereo equipment in Lawrence, Kansas back in the early 80's. My first product to hear was the Monolith and I owned the original Quest. When buying M & L you must realize that you are buying a piece of scientific equipment. One, you are purchasing an electrostatic panel and two, you are purchasing a speaker that will need to be placed OPTIMALLY in your room to get the best sound possible. Those rules are: Electrostatic elements DO NOT LIKE a smokey environment. If you smoke or you burn incense and/or candles, over time your electrostatic panels will accumulate a film that will affect the sound of the speaker. Since the panel has an electronic charge, it will have the necessary ingredients to form that film from air-borne contaminants. Location, location, location. All electrostatic panels push sound from the front AND from the rear. If you do not have your speakers placed away from the back wall, you will find that the sound from the rear of the panel will be out-of-phase compared to the sound from the front. The two sounds will cancel each other either partially or fully making a muddy sound. You want the sound to be ideal since the sound pressure from the rear of the panel is what gives that "encompassing" sound that these speakers are known for. Ideally, you will need at least two feel of space behind the panel and the speaker will need to be toed in to eliminate that interference. If you have a room that is not large enough to place these speakers and still contain your large screen TV AND THE REST of your furniture, then don't purchase them, you will not get the enjoyment from them as you might think you will. If you follow the rules, you will have the most enjoyable speaker made by man.Now the power. You may ask; "why does it have a internal power amplifier?" One of the early requirements with M & L speakers were that they were quite power hungry. Later models addressed that problem, but they still required a power amplifier that moved a lot of Current (amperes) not Power (watts). Consequently, people who bought these speakers also had a lot of money rapped up in an expensive high current power amplifiers. Since these M & L's have the power built in and are matched to the speaker, the extra money to purchase these speakers are well worth it. Remember, you are purchasing TWO mono-power amps when you purchase two speakers. That alone is worth at least $1200 if you were to purchase two high end power mono current amps by themselves. I thought my Puritys were the best sounding speaker ever, with plenty of bass, and seamless planar sound. The Vistas top them in spades. I was 100% happy with the Puritys and only bought the Vistas because Sunny made me a deal I could not turn down, even though I had not heard them. They make every CD sound like a perfect LP, with the blackness in the music, no graininess anywhere. Each instrument comes out of the black air, yet you hear the note trails off into infinity. I heard a cowbell coming from the left speaker, actually, about a foot and a half to the left of the left speaker. when music extends past the speakers themselves, you got good pair of speakers. These are amazing, and I listen to CDs I have heard a million times, and they sound eerily new and fresh. I am running them off a very inexpensive but good amp, with only 125 wpc. It really is not enough, at low volumes it sounds XLNT, but at high the amp strains (and even shuts off from thermal overload).
